Oticon Reveal Hearing Aids: A New Approach to AI-Powered Hearing

If you’ve ever struggled to understand someone in a restaurant, family gathering, meeting, or other busy environment, you already know the challenge isn't simply making speech louder.

Reveal introduces what Oticon describes as the world's first Dual AI hearing aid system, using two artificial intelligence systems simultaneously: one focused on speech and another focused on the meaningful sounds surrounding it. Rather than simply stripping away as much background sound as possible, the goal is to give the brain a clearer, more complete picture of the listening environment. 

That approach makes Oticon Reveal one of the more interesting hearing aid introductions we’ve seen recently. But new technology doesn’t automatically make a hearing aid the right choice for everyone.

What Is Oticon Reveal? 

Oticon Reveal is a rechargeable prescription hearing aid built on Oticon's new Reveal AI platform. It’s currently offered in a discreet miniRITE (mini receiver-in-the-ear) design and combines advanced AI sound processing with rechargeable power, wireless streaming, motion-based personalization, feedback prevention, and modern Bluetooth connectivity. 

The biggest change is the way Reveal approaches speech and surrounding sound. 

Many hearing aids use sophisticated noise-reduction systems to make speech easier to understand in difficult environments. The challenge is that aggressively removing surrounding sound can sometimes remove information your brain actually wants. 

Oticon is taking a different approach. 

How Does Oticon Reveal's Dual AI Work? 

Oticon Reveal uses two AI systems that operate together in real time. 

Speech AI continuously identifies and enhances speech from the people around you. 

Context AI analyzes the rest of the listening environment and preserves meaningful surrounding sounds. 

The two systems then work together to create what Oticon calls an optimal balance between speech and context. 

In plain English, Reveal is trying to help you understand the person talking without making the rest of the world disappear. 

Imagine having dinner at a restaurant. You want to understand the person across the table, but your brain may also benefit from knowing that someone beside you has started speaking, a server is approaching, or something important is happening behind you. 

Instead of treating every sound outside the main conversation as unwanted noise, Reveal is designed to determine which sounds provide useful context and keep those sounds available. 

That's an important distinction. 

Why Does Hearing the Surrounding Environment Matter? 

We don't hear with our ears alone. 

Your ears collect sound, but ultimately your brain must interpret that input and decide what deserves your attention. 

Oticon's longstanding BrainHearing philosophy is based on giving the brain access to a broader sound environment rather than simply narrowing the listener's world to what is directly in front of them. Reveal takes that concept further by assigning speech and contextual sounds to separate AI processing systems. 

For the right patient, the potential benefit isn't simply "hearing more." 

It's being able to move through a complex listening environment more naturally, following a conversation while staying connected to everything happening around you. 

Oticon Reveal Features 

Dual AI Sound Processing 

Reveal's biggest innovation is its dedicated Speech AI and Context AI systems. Both operate continuously rather than being limited to a special listening program. 

4D Sensor Technology 

Reveal also includes Oticon's 4D Sensor technology. Sensors consider the listening environment along with information such as head and body movement to help the hearing aids respond to what you appear to be trying to hear. 

This technology was introduced with Oticon Intent and continues with Reveal. 

Improved Feedback Prevention 

If you've ever heard a hearing aid whistle or squeal, you've heard feedback. 

Preventing feedback can sometimes require reducing amplification, particularly in frequencies where a patient needs more support. Reveal introduces the new Reveal Optimizer, designed to identify and prevent feedback faster and with greater precision. 

Oticon reports that Reveal can provide up to 25 dB more available gain than three leading competing devices, although this comparison is based on manufacturer testing and should be interpreted accordingly. 

This increased fitting flexibility may be particularly useful for people who require more amplification or who benefit from open or vented hearing aid fittings. 

Reduced Wind and Handling Noise 

Walking outside on a windy afternoon in Colorado or Arizona can quickly remind you how much hearing aids pick up. 

Reveal includes Oticon's Wind & Handling Stabilizer 2.0. Oticon reports up to 40 dB of wind and handling noise attenuation, up to 10 dB more than its previous generation technology. 

Rechargeable, All-Day Power 

Oticon Reveal is rechargeable and designed for full-day use. 

Oticon also reports that a 15-minute quick charge can provide up to four additional hours of hearing aid use, although actual battery performance depends on your hearing loss, streaming habits, device settings, battery age, and other factors. 

Bluetooth Streaming 

Reveal supports direct wireless connectivity with compatible iPhone, iPad, and Android devices and uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology. 

Oticon reports 53% better connection stability and up to 32% greater streaming range compared with Oticon Intent over Bluetooth Low Energy. Those figures come from Oticon's internal technical testing. 

Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast 

Reveal supports Bluetooth LE Audio as well as Auracast broadcast audio. Auracast is an emerging technology that allows compatible hearing aids to receive audio broadcasts directly in places such as theaters, airports, meeting spaces, and houses of worship as more venues adopt it. 

Oticon Reveal vs. Oticon Intent: What's Different? 

Oticon Intent was already an advanced hearing aid and introduced the company's 4D Sensor technology. Reveal does not abandon that approach; it builds on it. 

The biggest differences are: 

• Dual AI: Reveal separates speech processing and contextual sound processing into two dedicated AI systems. 

• New Reveal AI platform: Reveal represents Oticon's third generation of AI-powered hearing technology. 

• Reveal Optimizer: The new feedback-management system is designed to provide greater flexibility in fitting and usable amplification. 

• Improved wireless connectivity: Reveal introduces a redesigned connectivity platform that delivers greater streaming stability and range. 

• Updated wind and handling noise management: Reveal includes Wind & Handling Stabilizer 2.0. 

Oticon reports that 94% of participants in its internal testing preferred Reveal over Intent. That's interesting, but it is still manufacturer-generated research, not independent head-to-head clinical evidence. Independent testing of Reveal is still emerging because the product is so new. 

For someone already doing very well with Oticon Intent, "newer" does not automatically mean you need to upgrade. We would want to know what you're currently struggling with first. 

Is Oticon Reveal Good for Hearing Speech in Background Noise? 

Potentially, and this will probably be one of the main reasons people consider Reveal, but there is an important distinction. 

Reveal isn't designed simply to eliminate background noise. Its Dual AI system is designed to enhance speech while keeping useful contextual sounds available. That approach may be especially appealing to someone who wants better speech clarity without feeling cut off from the rest of the room. 

People who strongly prefer extremely aggressive background-noise reduction may prefer a different manufacturer's processing strategy. This is exactly why there’s no single "best hearing aid." Different hearing aids process complicated environments differently, and your preference, to blunt, is your preference and that’s what you like. 

Can Oticon Hearing Aids Help with Tinnitus? 

Hearing aids can play an important role in tinnitus management for some people, particularly when hearing loss is also present. 

Oticon also offers its Tinnitus SoundSupport system on compatible hearing aids. Tinnitus SoundSupport can provide customizable relief sounds such as broadband and ocean-like sounds, which can be adjusted by an audiologist and, when supported, controlled through the Oticon Companion app. 

This is important because we believe the evaluation is much more important than the hearing aid brand. Not everyone with tinnitus has hearing loss, and having tinnitus does not automatically mean that hearing aids or an Oticon device is the right treatment approach.

What About Single-Sided Deafness? 

Oticon is also introducing the Oticon CROS RE for people with single-sided deafness. 

A CROS system picks up sound arriving on the poorer-hearing side and transmits it to the better-hearing ear. Oticon CROS RE is compatible with Reveal and incorporates Dual AI technology. 

Whether CROS, BiCROS, a traditional hearing aid, or another solution is appropriate depends on the hearing ability in each ear and should be determined through a comprehensive hearing evaluation. 

Is Oticon Reveal the Best Hearing Aid? 

Maybe for you. Maybe not. That's a much more useful answer than telling everyone the newest hearing aid is automatically the best one.

Reveal's new feedback system may provide an audiologist with additional fitting flexibility, but that advantage only matters if the hearing aid is carefully programmed and verified for the patient.
