What’s Included With The Sound Relief Method?
The Sound Relief Method integrates the best of modern audiology, neuroscience, and compassionate care through:
Cognitive Behavioral Techniques (CBT)
We use CBT due to strong evidence showing it significantly reduces distress, anxiety, and depression to support brain rewiring and symptom reduction related to tinnitus. The most effective and economical way to offer CBT is through the newly FDA-approved Oto Pro app. Oto’s program incorporates daily audio sessions for 10 - 15 minutes per day for a minimum of 12 weeks via their smartphone app. Oto was developed by experts in CBT for tinnitus specifically. This program has been proven to be just as effective as one-on-one therapy, at a fraction of the cost, when led by a trained audiologist who can guide the patient through the process. By combining CBT with TRT, we see the best results for our patients in far less time.
Multi-step fitting process & Real Ear Measurements (REM)
We use best practices to ensure the PST is maximized for effectiveness over time. When amplification is needed, this involves gradually adapting to the amounts of gain required to meet prescriptive targets, as demonstrated by Real-Ear Measurements (REMs). Typically, this adaptation process takes a minimum of 12 weeks, which is why initial follow-up visits are critical to a patient’s success with treatment. Much like physical therapy, we often start with a low level of amplification to keep the PST soothing and calming. Like rebuilding a weak muscle, we slowly add small amounts of hearing correction to the PST to give the brain back any missing input that it is searching for due to damage along the auditory pathways (even imperceptible levels of hearing loss with a mild to moderate noise-induced notch).
In-person Prescriptive Sound Therapy (PST) adjustments
Prescriptive sound therapy (PST) needs to be adjusted over time as the nervous system adjusts and the tinnitus changes. As symptoms evolve, our audiologists fine-tune the PST to ensure that it is soothing and calming, which can vary depending on progress and/or tinnitus triggers. Virtual appointments are also available when needed.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)
We utilize prescriptive sound therapy tailored to each patient for maximum effectiveness, along with ongoing educational counseling. This includes how to incorporate sound enrichment and techniques to calm the nervous system’s response to tinnitus for long-term relief.
Loaner devices are available
If your devices ever require manufacturer attention, meaning we are unable to fix or resolve issues in-house, we will provide “loaner” devices for you to ensure treatment consistency. Most issues like wax buildup in a device can be resolved easily by any of our staff in our clinics, but at times accidents happen, like a device quitting from excessive moisture exposure or from simple wear and tear. When these incidents occur, we have loaner devices that we program to your exact prescription so that no time is lost when a more complex repair is needed.
Orientation and device training
To help our patients feel confident and comfortable from day one, we understand that they need individualized device orientation and training. That is why we spend extra time making sure this step is easy for our patients, often with the assistance of our Audiology Assistants and/or Patient Care Coordinators. Every member of our team is trained to assist patients with basic device use and troubleshooting, so that no one is without their sound therapy and/or tinnitus treatment.
Concierge-style support
We do not limit the number of appointments our patients receive using the Sound Relief Method. We recognize that each case of tinnitus and/or sound hypersensitivity is unique and requires varying levels of support. This is why we say that our support is more “concierge-style” because we provide the level of care required to optimize treatment outcomes. Our appointments are tailored to each individual’s progress and their individual needs and goals. This typically entails a minimum of 6 visits in the first year to help fine-tune, tailor, and support our patients every step of the journey towards achieving relief.
Ongoing care and preventative maintenance
Not only is ongoing care helpful to treatment outcomes, but it is also critical to ensure that our patients have the latest firmware updates and devices that are performing at their best. We have invested in tools like suction and a Redux machine. Redux is a professional, in-office system that uses patented technology to safely and completely remove moisture from small electronics. It uses a combination of a vacuum chamber and gentle heat to vaporize and remove moisture. This treatment helps to improve the functionality, sound quality, and longevity of devices by preventing malfunctions caused by moisture from sweat and humidity.
Cerumen (earwax) management
Cerumen, or earwax, is the number one reason sound therapy devices and/or hearing instruments fail. To ensure comfort and device performance, we regularly perform cerumen management by cleaning both the devices and the ear canals as needed. We have invested in the tools and training necessary to become experts in cerumen management, ensuring that no time is wasted waiting for a doctor’s appointment for wax removal whenever possible.
Direct access
As technology is ever-changing and often frustrating when not functioning properly, we have trained every member of our staff to be proficient in basic device cleaning and maintenance. From Audiology Assistants to Patient Care Coordinators, everyone on staff is trained to be of assistance to our patients. This direct access to care ensures that frustrations with technology are minimized and that there are minimal disruptions to treatment or progress.
Annual reviews
Annual reviews involve both sound booth test results to ensure the auditory system is stable and standardized outcome measures to track measurable progress. Discussions revolve around the tools that are most effective for the patient, the strategies that work best if tinnitus spikes, and preventative techniques to make sure we are maximizing the long-term benefits of treatment.
Adjustment appointments
Follow-up visits to adjust devices and modify sound therapy characteristics are crucial to achieving long-term treatment success. We know that fine-tuning the settings for sound therapy and/or amplification based on a patient’s” real-world experiences” is also critical to long-term success. This is again why a minimum of 6 visits in the first year is encouraged and required for best outcomes with treatment.
At Sound Relief, every detail matters.
Nothing is rushed or off the shelf; every plan is designed around you. The result: quieter tinnitus and renewed confidence, peace of mind, and the freedom to fully engage in life again.

Why Is It Important To Treat Both Ears With Tinnitus?
Even if tinnitus feels like it’s coming from one ear, it’s actually generated and managed by the brain’s entire auditory system. Treating only one side leaves that system unbalanced, and in many cases, the tinnitus simply shifts to the untreated ear.
That’s why, for about 97% of patients, we recommend using sound generators in both ears. This balanced stimulation helps the brain retrain more effectively, leading to faster, longer-lasting relief.
Our pricing reflects a pair of devices - an investment in proper stimulation, stability, and lasting calm. In rare cases (such as when one ear no longer responds to sound), your audiologist may recommend a single device.
Technology levels differ primarily in sound quality and precision. Higher tiers provide more adaptive sound therapy and smoother transitions across listening environments, allowing for a more natural and effortless tinnitus management experience.
Through prescriptive sound therapy and The Sound Relief Method, we’ll help you calm your nervous system, retrain your brain’s response, and finally regain control from tinnitus.
